As previously stated, whilst living in China, you really do come across something “blog-worthy” on a daily basis. Why then do I post my blogs so erratically and intermittently? … I’m a busy man! Today however, I was reading the Shenzhen Daily (English language newspaper), and came across an article that simply had to be brought to the attention of the wider world.
In short, a dating show has been shut down by SARFT (State Administration of Radio, Film and TV). Since first airing at the beginning of this year, “If You’re the One” became China’s most popular tv programme. As far as I can gather 24 women put a guy on trial, one at a time to see whether he is worthy of their affections. There is something to do with lights being switched on and/or off, and I think there might even be a date at the end!
Anyway, the state has stepped in because there have been a series of scandals including ‘aggressive language’, sex photos and of course the young lady from Beijing who made the declaration that has become the title of this blog post. The wider implications of this sentiment are quite startling. I had first hand experience this money-driven psyche last week, when, in conversation with a YCG (Young Chinese Girl !!!), she stated that she would never consider dating a man who earned less than her. When I pushed and asked: what if he was the nicest guy in the world, almost a saint, was your “soul mate”, etc. etc.? …She stood firm and maintained that his salary must be higher than hers.
Plenty more to say on this and other topics.. and plenty of pictures/news to update you with – but for now, that’s all folks. I’ll leave you to ponder.
